The South County Land Stewards, together with the Orange County Fire Authority, are seeking volunteers for the South County Fire Watch.
Several Village homeowners have participated in this program during the past three years but more volunteers are needed, specifically for the Coto de Caza area.
Here’s how it works:
- On Red Flag days, South County Land Stewards assign rotating shifts of volunteers to wildlife vantage points to serve as deterrents and lookouts for fire professions.
- Participants are placed in locations easily accessible from where they live or work. For example, Village residents are often assigned to Starr Ranch’s entrance or the picnic area on Bell Canyon Trail.
- If you are not available to take a shift on a particular Red Flag day, that’s ok. The South County Land Stewards will work through the list to find someone who is.
Volunteers receive training from OCFA personnel. Training usually takes place in late July / early August. Red Flag days typically occur during September – November.
